A Sea Of Red Respect

Horley resident Peter von Staerck was the driving force behind the Royal British Legion, Horley Branch's  plan for a giant  “Hanging  Wreath” in the the  Town  Centre and planting   recycled artificial  poppies  in  the  Memorial  Gardens  for  Remembrance  Day,

He explains more about this in the  Crawley Happy Times  “Everything is made from recycled poppies from the wreaths and tributes of last year, all from 6 councils, that would all normally go to landfill!

Two Horley Events and I was away for both so relying on Facebook and a report from a local newspaper.

More than 380 pioneering vehicles dating back to the very dawn of motoring took part in this year’s Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

As tradition dictates, the 119th anniversary run set out from London's Hyde Park at daybreak and headed 60 miles south through misty Surrey and onto the sunny Sussex seafront.

They were joined en route by three classic coaches driven by BBC radio broadcasters Chris Evans, Alex Jones and Ken Bruce, raising nearly £350,000 for BBC Children in Need thanks to the generosity of their 40 passengers.

A dull overcast morning just after 9am and a quick snapshot of the town center - first the pedestrianised area decked in poppy wreaths for Remembrance Sunday.

The latest new development at 71 Victoria Road (the old Virgin Car Park) - Sovereign Place.

According to Horley Online there are to be 2 retail units, 56 no, 1 and 2 bedroom flats and 6 no, 2 bedroom houses together with associated car parking and landscaping.

The first of the units to be occupied in the Russel Square development - 51 North

Latest view of another development  - Imperial Buildings (68-70 Victoria Road). the offices above the chiropodist and Chicken and Ribs takeaway are being converted into 12 flats with the addition of one floor.

This was the front view on 19 May when the scaffold was being erected.

Again from Horley Online 'In a Reigate & Banstead planning document published in 2006 it was stated that ‘The library site is identified as an area for environmental improvement and provision of town centre homes. A large proportion of the site is owned by Surrey County Council, who support the proposals of the Horley Town Centre Regeneration and are proposing the relocation of the library to a more accessible site in the town centre’'

Reports in the Surrey Mirror (7 September) said

COUNCIL officers are considering moving Horley's library to the site of the former Newman House building. Surrey County Council wants to relocate the popular service in order to make it larger.
At the moment, officers are eyeing up one of the four vacant retail units at Russell Square, a six-storey block of flats on the former Newman House site.

Carnival 2015

Overcast, rain showers but nevertheless a very well attended Horley Carnival 2015, highlight of which was the procession.

A Sad Sight

In recording Horley through 2015, this was one entry I had not anticipated, the sad sight of Strawson hall in Albert Road the day after a fire which has destroyed much of the building.

The hall is used by a number of community groups, including Horley Community Pre-School. A refurbishment had only been completed around 18 months ago following a six-year fundraising campaign. The hall began life in the middle of town and was moved to the far end of Albert Road in the mid-1920s.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service was called just after 1am yesterday after the  Hall caught fire. According to press reports Surrey Police has said the blaze was started deliberately.
